Nurakhtar draws on past experiences for FRONTPAGE
A radio deejay takes on the role of a reporter.
Suria FM deejay Nurakhtar Mohd Amin has had stints as a tele-customer service executive, writer for a local music magazine, voice-over talent, lecturer and now, radio presenter-cum-actress.
The petite 27-year-old believes the experience from her various jobs has helped her mature and become a confident person.
“I tried out various professions for the experience. Initially, my parents didn’t encourage me when I was dabbling in the entertainment field. They preferred that I pursue my Masters or PhD. Now, my folks have a positive perception of my job as an announcer and actress. Acting is something I have had a passion for since young,” said Nurakhtar, who holds a degree in advertising and multimedia from the Multimedia University in Cyberjaya.
Nurakhtar Mohd Amin plays journalist Rebecca in investigative
TV drama FRONTPAGE.
Nurakhtar, who hosts Suria 8-11 (weekdays, 8pm-11pm), stars as reporter Rebecca Anuar in Ntv7’s newest offering FRONTPAGE. Directed by Kabir Bhatia (of Cinta and Sepi fame), the drama series is about the challenges and risks journalists take when it comes to breaking stories.
In the series, Nurakhtar plays a young reporter with a troubled past. Her stepfather raped her when she was 12 years old, resulting in her becoming a bitter and cold person.
“We read stories about rape and incest victims in the newspapers almost daily. For the role, I tried to put myself in the victim’s shoes.
“Fellow cast member Jehan Miskin (who plays reporter Dylan Pereira) taught me how to project sadness. Kabir had always guided me along the way in developing my character,” said Nurakhtar.
Apart from the challenging role, Nurakhtar said it was tough juggling between radio announcing and acting.
“I had a hard time managing my schedule. I spent hours on the set during the day and had to rush to the station for my announcing responsibilities.
“Luckily, my bosses were understanding and the production crew worked around my working hours.”
Despite the hectic schedule, Nurakhtar said filming FRONTPAGE was fun and fulfilling.
“I was able to explore a new role which is poles apart from who I am. You don’t get the chance to express all of these feelings unless you are on stage, film or TV,” said Nurakhtar, who cited Angelina Jolie and Meg Ryan as her favourite actresses.
This Sunday’s episode, In the Name of the Father, is about badminton star Annie Ong who commits suicide after winning a major championship. Her death causes an uproar in the country. Jack (Tony Eusoff) and Rebecca are assigned to find out the reason behind the talented sports personality’s death.
FRONTPAGE is aired on Ntv7 on Sunday at 9.45pm.
